Sloppy Joe for when you want something yummy

This recipe is always a crowd favorite and it can feed a crowd. This dish can be made ahead of time and kept warm in a slow cooker and warm. If there are leftovers the cooked sloppy joe meat can be frozen.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 medium onion chopped finely
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup KC Masterpiece BBQ Sauce can also use ketchup
  • 1 TBL brown sugar or to taste
  • 1/2 TBL white vinegar
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard or 1/2 tsp ground mustard
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1/8 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp Salt and pepper each
  • 6 each hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Cook and stir lean ground beef in the hot skillet until some of the fat starts to render, 3 to 4 minutes. Add onion and continue to cook until onions have softened and beef is cooked through, 3 to 5 more minutes. Drain excess fat.
  • Stir in ketchup, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, chili powder, allspice, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Divide meat mixture evenly among hamburger buns.
  • If you find yourself with leftover Sloppy Joe or just feel like making a double batch, the meat mixture freezes well for up to one month.
  • Ground turkey can be substituted for the ground beef.

Notes

If using ground beef with a high fat content, be sure to drain it before starting Step 2.
